Jeremy wrapped his arms around himself as he looked around. Sun was streaming through the canopy above him, but the light provided no warmth. Below him, the forest floor gave slightly where he stepped, the soil working its way between his toes. Jeremy didn’t remember arriving here; in fact, he couldn’t even remember having seen a forest like this in real life, but here he was, freezing and oddly calm.
The trees, though unremarkably irregular in shape, with perfectly natural-looking ground cover, grew at disturbingly regular intervals, in some sort of strange, hexagonal grid. From behind one of these trees, a figure stepped, face obscured completely by an eery gas mask. Finally, Jeremy’s mind seemed to register the strangeness of his situation; his heart rate sky rocketed, and he broke out in a cold sweat.
As the figure approached, Jeremy found himself holding his breath, and a violent shiver worked its way down his spine when it reached out and took a hold of his chin. The figure seemed to consider him a moment, analyze him, the hiss of the mask the only sound in the forest.
"You will do," the figure said, its voice aloof, before turning and walking away. Jeremy gave in to his overwhelming urge to follow.
